9 Article 5 Every individual shall have the right to the respect of the dignity inherent in a human being and to the recognition of his legal status. All forms of exploitation and degradation of man particularly slavery, slave trade, torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment and treatment shall be prohibited. Article 6 Every individual shall have the right to liberty and to the security of his person. No one may be deprived of his freedom except for reasons and conditions previously laid down by law. In particular, no one may be arbitrarily arrested or detained. a. THE GHANAIAN CONSTITUTION Articles 13 to 16 of the Constitution provide: No person shall be deprived of his life intentionally except in exercise of the execution of a sentence of a court of a criminal offence under the laws of Ghana of which he has been convicted. Article 14 of the Constitution provides: 1. Every person shall be entitled to his personal liberty and no person shall be deprived of his personal liberty except in accordance with procedure permitted by law. 2. A person who is arrested, restricted or detained shall be informed immediately, in a language that he understands, of the reasons for his arrest, restriction or detention and of his right to a lawyer of his choice.
