Introduction 1. Algeria has ratified the African Charter on the rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) on 8 July 2003. 2. The present report has been developed in compliance with article 43, paragraph 1 and 2 of the African Charter on the rights and Welfare of the Child, et in accordance with the Guidelines on the form and contents of periodic state party reports submitted pursuant to the African Charter on the rights and Welfare of the Child (Document Cmttee/ACRWC/2 II. Rev 2). 3. During the drafting process of the present report, wide consultations were carried out within ministerial departments and relevant institutions, representatives of civil society organisations working on the promotion and protection of child rights were also involved. 4. Stakeholders of this process mainly focused on the aspects related to the implementation of provisions of the Charter. 5. The present report reviews the various legislative measures and regulations, and other actions and achievement in the areas pertaining to the implementation of the Charter. In this regard, it shows the progress made with regard to the rights enshrined in the Charter. 6. Through the submission of its initial report, Algeria reiterates its willingness to establish a fruitful cooperation and constructive dialogue with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and this was illustrated through the 18th session of the Committee that took place in Algiers from 26 November to 1st December 20011. 7. The submission of the present report, can also be seen as a follow up of a cooperation with other universal and regional human rights mechanisms, including the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights. 1
