HIV/AIDS

Prevalence rate
The national HIV prevalence rate decreased slightly from 1.5 percent in 2010 to 1.46
percent in 2011. The 2011 HIV Sentinel Survey Report indicated that the median
prevalence rate among pregnant women, however, increased marginally from 2.0 percent
in 2010 to 2.1 percent in 2011. The number of new infections recorded decreased from
12,890 individuals in 2010 to 12,077 individuals in 2011 (Table 5.8).

Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV
The National Strategic Plan 2011 – 2015 aims at reducing Mother-to-Child Transmission
of HIV (MTCT) from 30 percent in 2010 to less than 5 percent in 2015. During the year
the health sector undertook the following activities to achieve that objective:
