Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights affirms, in particular, that everyone charged with a criminal offence shall have the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law. They shall be entitled to communicate with counsel of their own choosing; legal assistance of their own choosing; to be informed, if they do not have legal assistance, of this right; and to have legal assistance assigned to them, in any case where the interests of justice so require, and without payment by them in any such case if they do not have sufficient means to pay for it. In this regard:  The provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure states that anyone in custody, detained or accused has the right to be represented by counsel during the proceedings (including during police custody)2. 55
