These initiatives have contributed, in the basic education sub-sector, to an annual increase of 5% in the number of school-going children since 2000, representing almost twice the growth rate recorded during the '90s (31,000 in 1990 to 63,612 in 2012). This increase has had a positive impact on the gross enrolment rate which rose from 37% in 2000 to 78.2% in 2012. The number of newly enrolled first year pupils has also risen in similar proportion: the gross intake rate for first year pupils has increased from 36% in 2000 to 76% in 2012 representing a 40% rise. Construction of new schools and rehabilitation of old ones have contributed to expanding intake capacities in intermediate and secondary education. These efforts to improve education supply have led to positive trends in gross enrolment rates: from 19% to 56% for middle schools and 9% to 36.5% for secondary schools between 2000 and 2012. As can be observed, the number of children in middle schools has tripled and those in secondary school even more so.
