The specific objectives of the islands are spelt out in the Zanzibar Health Sector Reform
Strategic Plan 2006-11 and include:
·
Developing, managing and sustaining a multidisciplinary health work force, which is
well trained, motivated and equitably distributed;
·
Providing health service delivery within five kilometres or less.
In 2004, there were 6 hospitals, 3 special hospitals, 2 referral hospital, 123 primary health
care units, 4 primary health care centres, and 81 dispensaries in Zanzibar. Due to poverty
and other reasons there are still disadvantaged groups and individuals who are unable to
access health care including the disabled persons and street children. The Department of
Social Welfare is responsible for facilitating services to orphans and other vulnerable
children..
