Non-formal education has also been one of the tools used to
empower women in education. Government has witnessed gender
parity at primary and secondary school levels, with respect to
enrolment rates. There is also gender parity in literacy rates of
96% for both women and men. The Net Attendance Ratio at
primary school level in 2011 was 87.3% for females and 86.6% for
males and Net Enrolment Ratio at the secondary school level, is at

Constitutional and Legislative Measures
8.1
The Constitution prohibits discrimination on a number of grounds
including sex, marital status, pregnancy, gender, whether one was
born in or out of wedlock and physical disability, all of which
impact directly on the rights of women relating to family, marriage
and divorce. Furthermore the same Constitution confers the same
rights to women as men regarding the custody and guardianship
of children. The Constitution also provide for the protection of the
family, marriage and marriage rights respectively emphasising that
there should be equality of rights and obligations of spouses
during marriage and at its dissolution and that marriage should be
entered into with the free and full consent of the intending
spouses106.
8.2
Zimbabwe is currently reviewing all laws governing marriages in
order to ensure their conformity to the Constitution. The
matrimonial laws are being reviewed with the view to come up
