The most widely known measure of maternal health is the maternal mortality rate (MMR). Maternal mortality is defined as deaths occurring in women, while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes (expressed per 100,000 live births). It is very difficult to collect data relating to this indicator. 190. The chart below shows that the maternal mortality rate increased from 827 to 1,084 per 100,000 live births between 1996-1997 and 2009.
