1.3 West Africa
The West Africa region is also confronted, in
selected parts, with the triple human security
threats in the form of conflict, migration and the
pandemic. The region’s proximity to Europe and
the rest of the world, and its high population
density all impact on the trends of the pandemic
in the region, which now has the second highest
rates of infection in Africa. As of 16th May 2020,
West Africa had
registered a total of 23,652 cases, distributed as
follows. Ghana has registered the highest cases
of Covid-19 in the region, with 5,735 confirmed
cases, 29 deaths and 1,754 recoveries, followed
by Nigeria with 5,621 confirmed cases, 176 deaths
and 1472 recoveries. The country with least
cases is The Gambia, with 23 confirmed cases of
Covid-19, 1 death and 12 recoveries.
