The region’s proximity to Europe and the rest of the world, and its high population density all impact on the trends of the pandemic in the region, which now has the second highest rates of infection in Africa. As of 16th May 2020, West Africa had registered a total of 23,652 cases, distributed as follows. Ghana has registered the highest cases of Covid-19 in the region, with 5,735 confirmed cases, 29 deaths and 1,754 recoveries, followed by Nigeria with 5,621 confirmed cases, 176 deaths and 1472 recoveries. The country with least cases is The Gambia, with 23 confirmed cases of Covid-19, 1 death and 12 recoveries. 24
