THE TREATY FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY THE EAST AFRICAN COURT OF JUSTICE _______ RULES OF PROCEDURE (Made under Article 42(1) of the Treaty for the Establshment of the East African Community) _______ IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred on the East African Court of Justice by Article 42(1) of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community, the Court makes the following Rules of Procedure. PART A SECTION I Preliminary Provisions Citation and commencement. 1. These Rules may be cited as the East African Court of Justice Rules of Procedure, 2019 , and shall come into force on a date appointed by the President by notice in the Gazette. Interpretation. 2. In these Rules words and expressions shall have the meanings assigned to them respectively in the Treaty, and unless the context otherwise requires— “advocate” means an advocate who is entitled to appear before a superior Court of any of the Partner States; “agent” means a person who is duly appointed by a party to act for or in his or her behalf; 8
