105. Although there has been some reduction, malnutrition remains high with 47% of children
stunted with 20% severely stunted. The prevalence of diarrhoea and disease outbreaks
such as measles have a significant influence on nutritional status, particularly acute
malnutrition and have to be taken into account when interpreting nutrition surveillance
results. The nutrition-related MDG target is projected to be reached but underweight
children and stunting remain high.

106. The interventions chosen to combat malnutrition will be identical to those of the first EHP
and also detailed in the National Nutrition Policy and Strategic Plan (2008-2012) namely
growth monitoring and screening for children under 5, Vitamin A supplementation, deworming and the treatment of severe and moderate malnutrition. Investments in child
survival interventions such as vaccines for various diseases, effective treatment of pneumonia
at community level, effective prevention and treatment of malaria and diarrhoeal diseases
have contributed significantly to the remarkable decline in infant and under 5 mortality rates
as can be seen in Figures 4 and 5 below:
