The principle of non-discrimination is enshrined in the Constitution. It is integrated into the
legislation and formalized in several areas including equality of all before the taxation
system, access to justice, equal pay for equal work, access to public services, etc.
The Constitution guarantees women the right to participation in political and public life. It
also recognizes their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights as proclaimed in
the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 and the African Charter on Human and
Peoples’ Rights of 1981.
