Mauritius needs to take a number of legal and institutional measures to implement fully the provisions of the convention, which are closely linked to human rights issues. According to the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Senior Citizens Welfare and Reform Institutions, Mauritius will be in a better position to ratify the Convention and the Optional Protocol now that it has promulgated the Equal Opportunities Act and elaborated the National Plan of Action on Disability. The government has taken a firm stand on the retention of the Death Penalty Act on the statute book. The act, in practice, has the same effect as deleting the implied reference to the death penalty in the constitution.
