In 2012, three provinces-KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Eastern Cape accounted for over
50% of the number of PLHIV in South Africa. This is largely because KZN and Gauteng are
the most populous provinces in South Africa. The estimated prevalence of HIV (the
proportion of people living with HIV in the country) increased from 10.6% in the 2008 HIV
Household Survey, to 12.3% in 2012.49
An encouraging finding is that more South Africans are aware of their HIV status (see Fig 3).
This is largely due to the success of the HIV Counselling and Testing Campaign (HCT)
launched by the Presidency in November 2009. However females are substantially aware of
their HIV status than males due to additional effects of the Prevention of Mother to Child
Transmission (PMTCT) programme.
