Prevalence The sentinel surveillance data for 1998 showed HIV/AIDS prevalence of 0,7% for pregnant women.39 Low acceptance of condom use among men and women adds to the fear that HIV infection rate may very well increase in Zanzibar. A 2002 communitybased HIV/AIDS survey conducted among 2,400 men and 3,500 women found 38 respondents to be HIV infected. The prevalence rate in the total population aged between 12 and 65 years was 0.6%, 0.2% for men and 0.9% for women, the difference being statistically significant. Urban prevalence rates were significantly higher then rural prevalence rates (0.9% and 0.5%, respectively) with comparable patterns of sexual behaviour and use of condoms during sexual relations.
